Welcome
to the website of Ascension of Our
Lord Catholic Church in historic
Donaldsonville, Louisiana. The
establishment of our Catholic faith
community pre-dates the
establishment of Donaldsonville by
50 years at a time when the United
States territory was still
served by missionary clergy of the
Catholic Church in Europe. We have
the distinction of being a community
of faith to which St. Elizabeth Ann
Seton deployed her missionary
Sisters of Charity in the 1800’s and
one that was visited personally by
St. Katherine Drexel in the early
1900’s. We are also the location of
the first ordination of a Catholic
bishop in the Louisiana territory in
the early 1800’s. We figure
prominently in the earliest ministry
of the Daughters of Charity of St.
Vincent de Paul of France and the
Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Click
on our “About
Us” link for our
history. We are home to the oldest
Catholic school in the
Diocese of
Baton Rouge and one of the largest
and most historic Catholic
cemeteries in the Diocese of Baton
Rouge.
Our
website includes features which will
assist our current parishioners, as
well as newcomers to our parish, and
also be of interest to the curious
visitor, web-surfer, and prospective
tourist. We are the largest of three
Catholic Church parishes in
Donaldsonville, with over 2,500
registered members. Ascension
(civil) Parish was named after our
Church parish. This is a community
that loves the rich heritage of its
Catholic faith and loves to pray!
Considering our limited professional
and support staff, we are proud of
our HUGE number of
ministries and
outreach sustained by volunteer
laity from our congregation. May
Jesus Christ be praised!
Yours in Christ,
Pastor, Rev. Philip F. Spano
